Counting by Fives

This morning I asked my granddaughter Ari - a first grader - how she liked school this year. Turns out her teacher is a bit more strict than she likes, so it's just so-so. She did  want to show us she's been taught to count by 5s with hashmarks.  She took paper and pen in hand and drew four vertical lines and finished with a diagonal line through them.

That brought back a memory of the times Dad and I would clean oats on our little cleaning mill to use for seed. With each cleaned bushel basket full of cleaned seeds, we'd mark a hashmark on the granary wall just like she did. I explained that, but it probably didn't mean much, even to her parents who stood there.
